Today, on the feastday of the holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian, in the women’s monastery in Matka, dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, Metropolitan Nahum of Strumica celebrated Divine Liturgy.
“Do not be over-sophisticated in the words you use when praying: the simple and unvaried stammering of children has often been most pleasing to their heavenly Father. Do not try to be verbose when you pray, lest your mind be distracted in searching for words. A single word of the Publican attracted God’s mercy and a single word, filled with faith, saved the thief. Loquacity in prayer often distracts the mind and leads to fantasy, whereas brevity makes for concentration” (
