Attachment to anything whatsoever in this world provokes the tempter to occupy the thought of the struggler for devoutness with the present life rather than with the one beyond.
As Saint John of the Ladder says “only he who has died to everything earthly remembers death. Whereas he to whom there is still something earthly important cannot even get used to the thought he is to face death, since he hinders himself with his own desires” (Homily 7)
