Crucial Developments ( 17.05.2005 )

The day started out with clashes in Jerusalem. This was caused by Patriarch Eirnaios’ wish to enter the Patriarchal throne room. This intention was announced from his residence, where he remains under guard. This brought stiff reactions from the rest of the clergy, who refuse to surrender the keys to him. As reported from Jerusalem by NET correspondent Panos Charitos, the Israeli police are at the scene by order of the political leaders, in order to accompany Patriarch Eirinaios and escort him into the room, on condition that he makes no move to convene the III Synod. Negotiations concluded with the intervention of the General Secretary of the Israeli Cabinet, who took on the role of mediator and asked the two sides not to take any action with regard to the III Synod until positions have been clarified. Nevertheless, Eirinaios proceeded to convene the Synod at his residence, with the Hierarchs who support him, with four Synod members and seven clergy in attendance. In the meantime, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchy convened today in Phanar. They unanimously decided to convene the Supreme Synod next Monday (23 May) to decide on Eirinaios.
