Georgia to renew the ancient Georgian monastery in Cyprus founded by Empress Tamar ( 02.05.2006 )

Georgia has decided to renovate an ancient Georgian monastery in Cyprus. in Gallia there will be archaeological researches conducted and a reconstruction plan drawn up.

The monastery of Saint Mam (Saint mamas) was built in the twelfth century by the empress Tamar. During one of her journeys, she died here under mysterious circumstances and was buried. Ruins, few frescoes from the 13th century and walls of St. Nicholas’ church are all that has remained. Still, there are worship services every Sunday at the monastery ruins, at which the local Georgians gather.

In Cyprus live around six-thousand Georgians, who moved here in the last fifteen years.

Reconstruction works are to be carried out in yet three Georgian monasteries in Cyprus.
