International campaign for revival of Agia Sophia in Istanbul as an Orthodox shrine

The organization Free Agia Sophia Council in America has announced the beginning of the international campaign for restitution of the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom (Agia Sophia) to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The campaign emphasizes that this is an international movement initiated in the USA with the aim the great church in Constantinople (Istanbul) to become again a living Orthodox church. As an argument for restitution of the church it is stated that “the Government of Turkey names and uses the church as a museum, organizing in it local and international trade exhibitions, concerts, and fashion shows”, and underlined that “it is a matter of desecration of a holy place”. The movement has been gaining all the greater support in the USA and in the EU countries.
